In the process of becoming irrelevant

A commentary on the current state of the IT job market...

Have you lost your job today?
Don’t worry you will loose it tomorrow!

This is the new normal in the current industry. I remember talking with one of my friends almost 10 years ago. He was working in Telecom, and he lost his job. That industry was in a pickle in the country we lived. He was not getting a permanent job anymore. He was forced to jump between contractual temporary works. Six months in one company and six months in another. It was hard to comprehend his situation, because at that time IT industry was stable and we didn’t have this kind of concern!

Back to recent time. Every day I open the internet, I see lots of stories floating around. People are falling down. 20+ years of experience suddenly becomes irrelevant, and jobs are out of reach! I wonder what went wrong! Wars? Recession? AI? What exactly?

I see people trying to make their points with posts- β€œWe are relevant”, β€œAI can’t replace human”, β€œWe are still needed”! But, is that the reality? Or is it just wishful thinking?

Taxes going up, health care become worse, after retirement plans are in jeopardy. But, that doesn’t even matter. It is here and now, your livelihood is ending today, your long term plans are going to ashtray, and nobody knows what to do next? What will happen to the industry after 2 years? How many of us are getting replaced? Who is getting this optimized profits? And how much profit they need?

How to make the world a better place? This is a question that would draw different answers from each individual. Probably we as human don’t even matter that much, because earth barely needs us. It is alright, we can comfortably disappear.
